Recently I read an article titled, “How to Avoid Vocal Strain”  in the latest issue of Making Music. The article piqued my interest and I was encouraged to research other perspectives on this topic.

I found a number of additional blogs, articles, and videos touting suggestions for avoiding vocal strain. After reviewing different perspectives, I came to the conclusion that maintaining a healthy voice can be summed up by implementing three suggestions:

1) Eat a healthy diet, including lots of water.

2) Warm up your vocal chords before you sing full out, just as you would stretch before exercising your body.

3) Sing from the diaphragm, not the throat.

Of course there are a lot of other recommendations, but implementing these three is a great place to start.
